Fleetwood Town Reserves

FRIDAY AUGUST 27TH 2010

LANCASTER CITY RESERVES 3 FLEETWOOD TOWN RESERVES 2

Fleetwood’s second string produced a far better performance than in their opening game, last week’s defeat at Workington.
Town made six changes to the starting eleven, Kieran O, Boyle, replaced Kyle Thomas in goal, Shaun Moulding and Sam Christensen came into the back four. Conor McGough and Chris Vivian bolstered the midfield and Mark France returned up front. There was also a new face on the bench; Joe Higgins getting his first taste of Reserves team football.
Despite the score line Fleetwood were the better football team through out the game. Ultimatley, however they were undone by three defensive errors. Fleetwood opened the scoring on twenty-five minutes, Moulding’s corner met with a powerful header from Liam Wynn. Lancaster equalised within ten minutes when a long punt from the goalkeeper was allowed to bounce and the Lancaster forward brushed past the back line and finished with some style.
Fleetwood started the second period somewhat slower than their hosts and spent the first ten minutes of the half under the cosh. From a rare break away France had a golden opportunity to score but only managed to hit the post. Although Lancaster threatened, goalkeeper O, Boyle was never really called into action. That changed however when once again the powerful Lancaster centre forward got the better of the Fleetwood defence, the result being a fine shot leaving the keeper no chance.
Lancaster increased their lead from a set play with the Fleetwood goalkeeper in two minds and allowing them the edge and their third goal.
Town never allowed their heads to drop and showed some real fight as they tried to claw a goal back. Some fine goalkeeping kept Fleetwood at bay until the last ten minutes when France forced the ball over the line following a corner. There followed constant Town pressure on the host’s goal but the third goal was not to come.
Although the difference in age of the two sides was a year or two in favour of the home side Fleetwood were not over powered or intimidated for the majority of the game and the youngsters can take great credit form the game.
Next up are Bamber Bridge away on September 18th followed by a home game, all be it at AFC Blackpool, against Witton Albion on the 20th.
