Fleetwood Wednesday Academy Squad Vs Spalding United

Fleetwood Academy Vs Spalding United

Result : 3 - 1

Football Conference Youth Alliance

Fleetwood Academy side win three in three and go top of the FCYA league with a 3 - 1 victory over visitors Spalding United. A number of changes to the side allowed players to showcase themselves in readiness for the up coming FA Youth fixture.

The Fleetwood youngsters started bright and passed the ball well with purpose, this was rewarded in the third minute when Tanser met a cross from the right wing and slotted the ball home past the diving keeper.  Town continued to dominate the game with some good passages of play and positive moments creating scoring opportunities which where not converted.  The Town rear guard were not put under much pressure but did deal with what was placed onto them, with both Duggan and Roskell nullifying any threats. The 1 - 0 lead lasted till the final minute of the first half, when Dell who had been causing problem for the visitors left back, went past him and with a looping cross found the far corner to score his first goal of the season after finishing leading scorer last year.

The second half continued as the first with Town being guilty of missing golden opportunities to increase their lead. The visiting keeper being tested from a number of town players. It was not till the 88 minute and a piece of individual skill from Thompson rounding three defenders and slotting the ball into the net that the score line increased to three.  The visitors had minimal opportunities to score, this was done to the strength of defending from Fleetwood and it wasn't till the 93 minute and the last kick of the game that a wonder strike from 25 yards beat Mainwaring into his top left hand corner.

Another good performance from the young players, showing the confidence to keep the ball and be patient when in possession. All the players are fighting for positions in the forthcoming FA Youth fixture and performances today will give the management team tough decisions to make.

Man of the Match : This goes to Philip Roskell for a cool and composed game in the heart of defence.

Fleetwood Sunday Academy Squad Vs AFC Fylde

AFC Fylde U18s Vs Fleetwood U17s

Result : 3 - 1

LFA Cup

Last seasons winners of the Lancashire Football Association Cup go out against local rivals A.F.C. Fylde but gave an excellent account of themselves against older opposition.

Fleetwood town came into this game on the back of two good victories in the league but they knew this would be their hardest test so far this season. The team consisting of first year scholars from the development centre showed just how much they have improved both individually and as a squad during the last few weeks.

Fleetwood started the game impressively with a high tempo and some good possession with Mike McAlpine and Jake Salisbury controlling the game from midfield. The Town players were first to the ball and had Fylde on the back foot for most of the opening 20 minutes. However the Fylde centre forward Matutu Chufya always looked dangerous on the break. Fleetwood had three good efforts on target from Dom Amos, Mick McAlpine and Jake Salisbury but the Fylde keeper Craig Unsworth dealt with them well. At the interval Town felt unfortunate that they weren’t ahead but the message from the coaching staff was simple “just keep doing the same things."

In the second half the game became scrappy but Fleetwood didn’t look like conceding until an individual error from a town defender gave  Fylde the lead. Another long ball played over the Fleetwood town defence needed simply heading back to the keeper but unfortunately the defender failed to see the town keeper advancing and headed into his own goal.
Despite this the young town players still continued to push forward and keep possession but again an individual error gave Fylde a free kick just outside the penalty area. As the town keeper Joe Wheeler was setting up his wall the Fylde player took the free kick. It hit the post and nestled in the back of the net. To the absolute dismay of all the Fleetwood players and staff and most of the Fylde players it has to be said the Referee allowed the goal to stand.

Once again the Town players didn’t allow this to affect their performance and on 65 minutes Ashley McGough smashed the ball home to put Fleetwood back in the game. Josh Cawley then got what Fleetwood thought was the equaliser when he struck a delightful shot into the bottom corner only to see the Fylde assistant referee rule it out.
Fleetwood then made changes to the formation to go looking for the elusive equaliser but unfortunately it was Fylde that took advantage of the space at the back and finished the game off.

After the game Fleetwood manager Mark Bowley said “Steve (Steve Kershaw assistant manager) and I are delighted with the effort and commitment from the lads they have shown they can step up to this level. For long period we were the better side despite the age difference. The lads will be disappointed to have lost and that’s only right but they are developing well and that’s why we are here. Credit to Fylde they battled hard and got the bit of luck you need in these types of games and good luck to them. After winning this competition last season it is always disappointing to go out but I am very proud of my players today.”

Fleetwood Wednesday Academy Squad Vs Southport

 Southport U19s Vs Fleetwood Academy

Result : 1 - 4

Football Conference Youth Alliance

Fleetwood recorded their second win in two during a below par performance, which still proved enough to secure a 4-1 score line against their Conference neighbours Southport.  The game was played at Haig Avenue and the warm up showed the quality of the pitch should of allowed Town to show the technical passing abilities that they are capable of.  This only happened in spells throughout the game.

From the kick off Port looked determined to upset the town youngsters good start to the season and during the first 5 minutes created opportunities from three corners, which Town cleared with difficulty.  It was from a corner on the 8th minute that Port took the lead.  With Town again having difficulties in clearing their lines a strike through a crowded box found the back of the net.  It wasn't till the 20th minute of the game that Town created some good passing movement to release Vivian into the box but the move came to nothing, two minutes later a similar movement released Duffield to run at the keeper who brought him down in the area.  From the resultant Penalty, Christensen converted calmly to level the game.  This spurred Town on and only three minutes later with skill and composer Few netted a cooly taken lob from the edge of the box.  The score remained the same until half time.

The second half started the same as the first, with Town placing themselves under pressure with some loose passing and lack of cohesion. Port were winning a number of battles in the middle third, but the Town defense stood strong and never looked like conceding.  A change in formation and three substitutions within 10 minutes of each other instilled more life into Town. This resulted in some final third pressure and another composed finish, this time from Liam Wynn who finished off a good move by netting his first Academy goal and second club goal for the season. Substitute Andy Higgins scored his first of the season with a well taken strike across the keeper into the bottom corner.  During the final 10 minutes Town showed signs of what they are capable of and could of extended the score line further if not for some poor finishing and good defensive work from Port.

A good result on the back of a lower level performance. Now the squad needs to reflect on individual performances to ensure development for the next group of fixtures. Next up for the Academy squad will be Spalding United at home 29th September to be played at AFC Blackpool.

Man of the match for a composed game in the heart of defense was Philip Roskell.

Fleetwood Wednesday Academy Squad Vs MMU Newcastle

Fleetwood Academy Vs MMU Newcastle
Result : 2 - 1

Football Conference Youth Alliance

Fleetwood started their Academy season with a 2 - 1 win at AFC Blackpool ground. The visitors were MMU Newcastle from Manchester. Before the game the strong winds looked as though they would cause problems and effect the playing style of the young Fleetwood players. Throughout the game all the players adapted to the conditions well. The game kicked off and for the first 15 minutes Fleetwood allowed their oppositions to play football before putting a foothold on the game. When the young Fleetwood players kept the ball on the floor and created some good passing movements, one of which ended in a great save from the visiting keeper denying Kyle Bennett his first goal of the season. Bennett had to be substituted with minutes of the first half remaining with an injury and was replaced by Josh Few.

The pace of both Tanser and Dell created opportunities from both flanks. Dell coasting passed defenders and being fouled inside the area, only to be denied a penalty by the assistant referee who indicated the foul was committed outside the box. Making the keeper save from the resulting free kick. The stalemate went on to half time where the coaching staff were able to discuss tactical issues with the squad.

Fleetwood started the second half much brighter and with 2 minutes gone Dell again should his threat down the wing and cutting inside again was fouled this time well inside the area. From the resulting penalty Sam Christensen stepped up to calmly convert down to the keepers left.

This pressure from the wide men continued and 15 minutes later a crossed ball from the right was handled in the area, resulting in Towns second penalty. This time Christensen fired the ball low into the bottom corner to the keepers right giving him no chance.

The visitors made a change and got back into the game creating some opportunities of their own. Gaining a corner, they worked a well rehearsed set play resulting in a free header and a deserved goal. This spurred Town on and with Dell again down the right gaining a free kick which was taken early by Vivian produced a fine save from a close range header from Liam Wynn.

Man of the match for his two goals and a composed game in the heart of defense was Sam Christensen.

Fleetwood Sunday Academy Squad Vs Caton

Fleetwood Town U18  V Caton U18
Result : 3 - 1

Lancashire Evening Post Sunday Football League

The First game of the season for the Under 18’s, in the Lancashire Evening Post League and Fleetwood opened the campaign with three  points.
In the first twenty minutes fleetwood were guilty of complacency after last Sundays win in the cup and they got a good taster of what this league is about. Caton were first to the ball and winning the midfield battle and they got their reward with the opening goal.  Fortunately this seemed to kick start Town into action and the excellent pairing of Mick McAlpine and Jake Salisbury started to boss the game. Tyler Atack and Josh Walker worked hard up front but every effort on goal was thwarted by the excellent Caton keeper. Just as Caton were thinking they would be leading at the interval Leigh Clark worked himself clear on the right of midfield and delivered a pin point cross for Atack to head home the equaliser.

In the second half Fleetwood dominated and passed the ball around well with Mick McAlpine again pulling the strings in midfield. It was McAlpines cross that found Josh Walker unmarked in the Caton penalty and he superbly finished to score his fifth goal in two games.
Fleetwood then made three changes. John Fraser came on at right back and looked composed in possession and went forward well. Lewis Philips replaced Walker and Josh Cawley replaced Atack. All three substitutes had an impact on the game with Philips pass giving McAlpine the chance to finish off the game and give him the Man of the match award.

After the game manager Mark Bowley said “We are pleased with the players response when we went a goal down but we must dominate team from the start. Our defending especially in the second half was good with Alex Bethell and Lee Gallagher outstanding and we worked hard upfront to created some good chances. Overall Steve Kershaw (Assistant Manager) and I are pleased with start we have made.
