The First game of the season for the Under 18’s, in the Lancashire Evening Post League and Fleetwood opened the campaign with three points.
In the first twenty minutes fleetwood were guilty of complacency after last Sundays win in the cup and they got a good taster of what this league is about. Caton were first to the ball and winning the midfield battle and they got their reward with the opening goal. Fortunately this seemed to kick start Town into action and the excellent pairing of Mick McAlpine and Jake Salisbury started to boss the game. Tyler Atack and Josh Walker worked hard up front but every effort on goal was thwarted by the excellent Caton keeper. Just as Caton were thinking they would be leading at the interval Leigh Clark worked himself clear on the right of midfield and delivered a pin point cross for Atack to head home the equaliser.
In the second half Fleetwood dominated and passed the ball around well with Mick McAlpine again pulling the strings in midfield. It was McAlpines cross that found Josh Walker unmarked in the Caton penalty and he superbly finished to score his fifth goal in two games.
Fleetwood then made three changes. John Fraser came on at right back and looked composed in possession and went forward well. Lewis Philips replaced Walker and Josh Cawley replaced Atack. All three substitutes had an impact on the game with Philips pass giving McAlpine the chance to finish off the game and give him the Man of the match award.
After the game manager Mark Bowley said “We are pleased with the players response when we went a goal down but we must dominate team from the start. Our defending especially in the second half was good with Alex Bethell and Lee Gallagher outstanding and we worked hard upfront to created some good chances. Overall Steve Kershaw (Assistant Manager) and I are pleased with start we have made.
