Fleetwood Town Vs Chester-Le-Street

The visitors this time were the established North East team Chester-Le-Street who travelled south to Thornton to play against a Fleetwood team made up mostly of the new crop of players.

The game kicked off at 2pm and after a structured team talk from Mark Bowley and a high tempo warm up the players started bright.  The visitors tried to play football whenever they were given the opportunity, this was in brief spells as the Fleetwood players pressured play all over the pitch and when in possession allowed the ball to move freely and with purpose.

Fleetwood broke the deadlock with a positive piece of play down the left and when the ball was crossed into the box Josh Few found himself diving in at the back post and turning the ball into the net.  The score line stayed the same to half time. The half time team talk was positive reflecting the play.

The visitors levelled the score line with a good piece of play but this only provided Fleetwood with the drive to press for more goals.  Both teams played some good football but it was Fleetwood who were the more positive and with further goals from Josh Few from a corner and a great strike from Gino King the score went to 3-1.  The strike from King was his second of the game, with his first only being denied by a fantastic save from the visiting goal keeper.

The visitors reduced the score line only to see Henry Ogden score a fine individual first goal for him and the fourth goal for Fleetwood.  The score line finished 4-2 and showed that the new intake of players have both the drive and determination to succeed.  The performance being a reflection of the pre-season coaching with the players using technical and tactical information gained in training and putting it into practise on the pitch.

Fleetwood Town Vs Motherwell

Motherwell travelled south on Friday and proved to be strong and structured opposition.  Fleetwood matched the Scottish Premier outfit in the first half for strength and moved the ball around the pitch well.  With some fine defensive work and goalkeeping from Kieran O’Boyle the visitors were denied on a number of occasion only to be beaten by a fantastically taken free kick which riffled passed the wall and nestled into the bottom corner.  The visitors scored a second with yet another great strike from the edge of the area from a corner after the ball had been cleared only to find a spare man.  Fleetwood reduced the score line with a solo run from Adam Sumner who ended with a strike worthy of any premiership player.
The second half showed the difference in teams as the visitors started to move the ball around with higher tempo and more purpose.  With a number of changes in personnel taking place and eagerness to win the ball back, the visitors produced some good passing movements, which unlocked the Fleetwood backline and produce two further goals to complete the scoring.
These types of games are great to show the lads the pace of elite level football and for them to understand the need for retention on the ball.  Motherwell who finished close behind Celtic in there Youth league last season beating Rangers to the second spot provided the challenge required for the Fleetwood squad to progress.  Moving the ball quickly with purpose is something we work on in training and this level of opposition gives the challenge to try to produce just that.

Fleetwood Town Vs Bury

Fleetwood travelled to Goshen Park for the fixture against Bury and return with a well deserved 3-1 win.

Fleetwood showed their intentions from the kick off, scoring after 10 seconds.  Tyler Atack running onto a through ball from Adam Sumner and neatly tucking the ball away.

Joe Higgins netted a brace in the first half seeing him off the mark for Fleetwood.  One of which was a great solo effort, beating three defenders before coolly lifting the ball over the oncoming keeper, this being one of the highlights of the game.  Another highlight was from a corner defender Jack Duggan executed a near perfect overhead kick at the back post only to be denied by a player hooking the ball off the line.

The attempts on goal came in waves with both forwards having further opportunities to increase their tally, along with supporting midfield players getting in on the act.

Bury performed some good play and created their own chances, only to be thwarted by Kieran O’Boyle in the Fleetwood goal.

Bury scored a consolation goal with a minute left on the clock after an error down the Fleetwood left, the ball was delivered and the finish was executed well.

The encouraging thing to take from the game more so than the score line, was the manner in which the players performed.  Taking information given in training session and transferring them onto the pitch during the game.  A number of outstanding performances were made by individuals, however the team performance shows a coming together of last years players and the new intake, and provides an excitement.
