FA Youth Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

Nantwich Town 2-3 Fleetwood Town
FA Youth Cup 3rd Qualifying Round
Monday 25th October 2010

Fleetwood Town’s youth side matched their first team in reaching the first round proper of the FA’s main competition by overcoming Nantwich Town away from home.

Fleetwood enjoyed a three goal lead for most of the first period thanks to a brace from midfielder Lewis Phillips and a penalty conversion by front man Ben Duffield. The home side pulled goals back either side of the break but Fleetwood always looked more composed and capable.

Nantwich did muster a fight-back in the second half, particularly when first year pro Jack Duggan went off injured, but Alan Wright’s men defended their lead until the final whistle.

The victory, along with success in earlier rounds against Prescott Cables and Vauxhall Motors, means Fleetwood now visit Macclesfield in the first round.

Town left-back and U18 manager Alan Wright said “We had control of the game in the first half but allowed Nantwich to edge back into the game with their first goal. The second half was more difficult for us but we battled on.  Loosing Jack Duggan was a blow because he is a good influence at the heart of our defence. But we dug in and ensured we progressed to the next round.”

Syndicate Cup

Cup action again for Fleetwood this time in the Syndicate cup against opposition from Bolton.

A last minute change of fixture meant that Town had to travel to Bolton in a potentially tricky fixture against new boys C.M.B.
Fleetwood welcomed back goal keeper Joe Wheeler and striker Tyler Atack into the squad however missing was Lewis Thwelis, Lewis  Phillips, Mick McAlpine, Henry Ogden and Lee Gallagher.
This meant a team re shuffle for the management team. In came Steve Rankin at left back and defender Alex Bethel moved to midfield whilst Jack Pope was on the bench.
For the Fleetwood players the first ten minutes meant getting used to the new system but they soon settled down and started to play some good football. Bethell and team captain Salisbury were dominate in the midfield and both full backs Amos and Rankin were getting forward well. However the final ball was poor and some of the build up play was sloppy. It was Leigh Clarke who on 35 mins eventually opened up a stubborn CMB defence with a delightful ball that found Tyler Atack un marked. His first touch was exquisite and his second sublime as he lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net for Fleetwoods opener.
C.M.B. then had probably their best period of play and caused the Fleetwood defence plenty of consternation however Town Keeper Wheeler was in excellent form and the score remained 1 v 0 until the break.

In the second period Fleetwood started brighter and with a much quicker tempo. The passing was crisper and more accurate then it had been in the first half and the strikers were making some excellent runs. Fleetwood eventually got their just rewards when they were awarded a penalty after some excellent work by Tyler Atack. It was Atack himself that stepped up and slotted the ball home.
Credit to C.M.B. they didn’t let their heads go down and an excellent effort on goal from outside the penalty area by one of the strikers had to be superbly saved by the Fleetwood keeper Wheeler.
Fleetwood finally killed the game off when substitute Josh Cawley came on to the field of play. It was his control and subsequent pass that released Atack to fire home towns third.
This gave Fleetwood more confidence and belief and they dominated the play for the rest of the game with some excellent flowing football. One such move saw Leigh Clarke release Steve Rankin who played a neat one two and then hit a terrific left foot shot passed the CMB keeper

After the game Manager Mark Bowley said “We knew this would be a good test for our players and they dealt with it well. The changes we made took a while to settle in but we soon adapted. The last 25mins was very good and we are pleased with our finishing. We have players who moving up to play for Alan Wrights team in the F.A. Youth Cup (Thwellis, Walker and Phillips) and this is what we are here to do and we are delighted for these lads.

GalaxyFootball Lancashire League

Town’s second string made the short journey to a rain lashed, blustery Kellamergh Park for this Lancashire League derby game. Fleetwood had to come from behind twice to secure all three points with what turned out to be a competent performance. If truth be known they actually made hard work of a game they should have easily won. Too many individual defensive errors cost them dear and Town had to dig deep to win, writes Steve Edwards.

The side was bolstered by the returning Adam Warlow and he will be more than pleased to of got the game under his belt. With fellow strike partner Theo Johnson he continually looked a threat and could have come away with a hat trick.

IMAGE: Welcome return. Warlow scores his first.

Fleetwood went behind against the run of play when Sam Christensen was caught in possession on the edge of the box. The Fylde striker crashed in the loose ball off the underside of the bar leaving Craig Dootson no chance. They weren’t behind too long however, Johnson flying down the right wing and crossing low and hard toward the front post. With Warlow lurking behind him, the defender panicked and slipped the ball past his own goal keeper.

Fylde started the second period the better, but Dootson was rarely tested. Unfortunately for Town more defensive sloppiness allowed the home side to take the lead for a second time. Fleetwood now upped their work rate and started to test the Fylde defence with every attack. From a long ball by Jack Duggan the home centre half misjudged his header and Warlow was on it like a flash. With the keeper coming towards him he expertly lifted the ball into the empty net.

With twenty minutes to go the home side began to show signs of tiredness and Fleetwood  sensed the game was there for the taking.  It was then Grant Dell was sent crashing to the floor in the penalty area Warlow stepped up to stroke the ball into the bottom corner from the resultant spot kick.

To their credit AFC kept going and from a wind assisted cross they levelled the scores when Dootson was put at a disadvantage by the wayward ball. The visitors would of felt hard done by if they had not taken all three points as they were clearly the better footballing side.

The deserved winner came with ten minutes left. From a Liam Wynn corner, Chrstenensen atoned for his earlier error by smashing the ball pass the home the custodian from twelve yards.

Manager Steve Edwards added “Fleetwood must tighten up defensively if they are to challenge for this league but the signs are good and their points haul now stands at ten from the last twelve.”

Team- Dootson, Bennett A, Moulding (Tanser 70), Duggan, Christensen, Dell, Camozzi, Wynn, Few, Warlow (Bennett K 75), Johnson.

LEP League

First away game of the season for Fleetwood Towns in the L.E.P league and it was at near neighbours Thornton Cleveleys F.C. and a return to his old club for manager Mark Bowley.
There was a very warm welcome from the Thornton manager and his staff and the usual banter from Thorntons club jester Rod Howarth. The facilities as usual were excellent and the pitch in good condition. Both teams were obviously fired up for the game with good technical footballers on both sides. Fleetwood were hindered by not having a recognised goal keeper and the fact that top striker Tyler Atack pulled up with a back injury after just 5mins however this did not distract from potentially a good game of football.

The first half, however was really a stale affair with both defences well in control and very few clear cut chances. Fleetwood did have the ball in the Thornton net after 20mins only to see it ruled out by the home team official. Thornton striker Liam McDonald should have put the home team ahead when his pace took him one on one with the stand in Fleetwood keeper Josh Cawley but his effort went wide.

As the first half was coming to a close the game came to light. Fleetwood took the lead when a corner found Fran Donaghy unmarked at the back post and he slammed the ball home. As the interval whistle was about to blow Thornton equalised with a well taken lob over the advancing Fleetwood keeper by Alex Stubbs.

A minute after the restart Thornton went into the lead. A free kick was floated into the Fleetwood penalty area and Thornton striker McDonald reacted first and flicked the ball home.
This goal only seemed to rejuvenate Towns enthusiasm and they took control of the game as the Thornton players appeared to tire. With excellent movement and passing from Mick McAlpine, Jake Salsbury  Sam Price and Henry Ogden it only seemed time before they would get the equaliser. A superb header from defender Alex Bethell was saved well by the Thornton keeper, another cross/lob from Striker Josh Walker went over the keeper hit the cross bar and post before rebounding to safety.

With Fleetwood camped in the Thornton half and appearing to be running out of ideas and the impressive defender for Thornton, Sam Johnson heading everything clear it was predictable that Thornton would eventually brake away and punish Fleetwood for not being clinical in front of goal. Again it was last seasons league top goal scorer Liam McDonald who sealed the game for Thornton.

After the game manager Mark Bowley said “It was great to go back to my old club the hospitality shown to the staff and the players was great. I am obviously disappointed with the result however the performance and effort from the players was excellent. The game in my opinion was played in excellent spirit by two very good teams. Our players are a year younger but Thornton showed just how difficult this league will be and we weren’t far off the pace. Thornton will be up there at the top at the end of the season I’m sure and we must keep believing in our own ability.

Man of the Match: Mick McAlpine. A superb display from Mick who for periods of the game totally controlled the midfield.

Squad: Cawley. Thwelis. Bethell. McGough. Donaghy. Amos. Salisbury. Wood. McAlpine. Ogden. Atack. Subs:  Price. Phillips. Rankin. Walker. Clarke

Fleetwood Wednesday Academy Squad Vs Stalybridge Celtic

Stalybridge Celtic Vs Fleetwood Academy

Result : 3 - 3

Football Conference Youth Alliance

This was Towns fourth game of the season and on the back of three wins and an impressive victory in the FA youth cup, the squad were in high spirits maybe too high. The Stalybridge team looked strong and were made up of all U19 players.

From the first whistle the home side looked to play and found hole in the Town back line to exploit. With Town struggling to find their feet the home side took full advantage. With a long ball played forward, an aerial challenge from Duggan deemed to be a foul in the area and from the resulting spot kick, Town were a goal down. Eight minutes later and another ball played forward to Stalybridge striker Sheriff who turned the defense and riffled in the home teams second goal. The score remained at 2 - 0 through to half time.

At the interval Town made a tactical change in formation to suit the very narrow pitch. This worked well and Town started to take control of the game and had numerous chances to reduce the score.  On 54 minutes Town received a free kick on just outside the area which was converted by Josh Walker.  This spurred Town on and were unlucky not to be given two penalties in the space on five minutes with a foul and a hand ball which were unseen by all officials.

Town pressed on and with ten minutes remaining a ball was played in from the right and the home sides centre half under pressure from Liam Wynn turned the ball into his own net to level the score 2 - 2. Town took the game to Stalybridge and looked likely to secure the win. When in the 87 minute and a rare attack from the home side ended in a free kick 35 yards out.  With the ball played into the box and an error between defense and goal keeper allowed the home side to take the lead 3 - 2.  Town pushed on and on the stoke of full time substitute Joe Mooney drove passed the home defense and nicked the ball passed the oncoming keeper who halted his progress, on this occasion the referee pointed to the spot and Sam Christensen calmly slotted the ball into the net to level the score at 3 - 3.  This was how it ended with the final whistle coming from the centre kick.

The old cliche of a game of two half was the order of the day with both sides having the majority of play in either half. The unbeaten run continues, with a tough encounter next week against a strong Birmingham City Blues side.

Syndicate Cup

Cup action again for Fleewtoods young players. This time in the Syndicate Youth cup against opposition from a higher league.
With goal keeper Joe Wheeler on holiday, and an administration hitch with the league, meant Town had no recognised keeper in the squad. However the multitalented Josh Cawley stepped into the breach and donned the gloves and deservedly kept a clean sheet.

Fleetwood started the game brightly and created some excellent goal scoring opportunities. Henry Ogden, starting his first game of the season and Tyler Atack the two Fleetwood strikers worked well together and caused the Newman defence plenty of problems. It was Lewis Thwelis fresh from his début with Fleetwood Reserves, filling in on the left side of midfield who finally opened the scoring on 29 minute with a powerful drive from the edge of the box. A Fleetwood corner was cleared by the Newman defence and fell to the feet of Thwelis who coolly fired the ball through a congested penalty area and into the net.
With Newam looking dangerous on the breaks Fleetwood knew they needed another goal whilst they were on top and it was Mick McAlpine who came up with the goods on 35min. A free kick approximately 25meters from goal was smashed into the Newman goal leaving the excellent Newman keeper rooted to the spot.
Despite some glorious efforts on goal by Fleetwood the score remained the same at the interval.

The second half commenced with Fleetwood driving forward but once again failing to convert some excellent passing moves. However credit to Newman, they remained in the game and created some goal scoring opportunities themselves however the Fleetwood back four excellently marshalled by Alex Bethell and Ash McGough stood up to the challenge.

Ironically it was a lucky break that eventually settled the game for Town when a shot/cross from Jordan Wood beat the Newman keeper and dropped into the far corner of the net.

Fleetwood finished the game off in style when Francis Donaghy came on as a sub and smashed his first of the season home the after excellent wing play from Steve Rankin.

After the game Manager Mark Bowley said “We have once again done well against opposition from the higher league. Some of our play was very good today but we must be more clinical in front of goal and we will be working hard to get this right. A huge amount of praise must go to our stand in keeper Josh Cawley who always stands up to the plate and did really well today for the team. Also special praise for Lewis Thwelis who has played for the reserves recently and the reports I have been receiving back are good. This once again highlights our aims and objectives with this team and Steve Kershaw and I are delighted with the progress so far. The next game is away to local rivals Thornton Under18’s which will be a good test for our younger players.

GalaxyFootball Lancashire League

A tricky away fixture against a team we have just played recently in a home draw 1 apiece, the reserves squad was bolstered by six first team squad members who turned out for tonight's fixture,Simon Grand ,Jack Duggan,Joe Comozzi,John Miles,Sean Clancy and Nick Rogan.

Town got the perfect start after 8 mins when John Miles collected a ball just inside his own half taking the ball in his stride he ran across his man to lift the ball over the advancing keeper.(0-1)Tales was up for Town and dominated with some excellent first time passing which Witton had no answer to.Nick Rogan nearly doubled Town's lead when his low effort was pushed away from the home keeper.Witton knocked Town out of there stride midway through the first half and was under the cosh a little with keeper Kieran O'Boyle making three excellent saves to keep Witton at bay.

Young striker Ben Duffield made an excellent run across the line and was through on goal he crossed to the far post where Nick Rogan blazed over from ten yards,in hindsight Duffield could and should of gone it alone and tried a shot himself.Sean Clancy and John Miles was pulling all the strings in midfield causing mayhem in the Witton defence.Witton was given a lifeline when Jack Duggan had allegedly pulled at his marker and a penalty was given by the inconsistent ref,up stepped Witton to level things just before the break giving the heroic O;Boyle no chance.(1-1) HT

Nothing much to say to the lads at the break only to keep playing the way we did the first quarter and we would come and on top (some inspired words from the watching Craig Madden at the brake also helped)
Town weathered what ever Witton had thrown at them, and this time made there first effort in the second half count when Simon Grand headed home Town's second at the far post to restore Town;s lead.(1-2).
Two mins A Trialists ran from the centre circle past three markers to slot home at the far post (1-3).to more or less put the game beyond Witton.

Town was in rampant mood now and further efforts from Josh Few and John Miles nearly extended Town;s lead further but for some good goalkeeping,Nick Rogan was next to get on the score sheet when he drilled in a beauty of a left foot shot into the top corner for Town's fourth.(1-4) Town now had the luxury of bringing the hard working Sean Clancy off for Lewis Thewlis who was in the action straight away with some clever footwork eluding his marker to whip over a cross to the far post which Josh Few was inches away.Town had the game in the bag and was playing some fantastic football which Witton had no answer to.Another substitute for Town bringing on Kyle Bennett for the Trialists.Nick Rogan then had a useful ten minute cameo performance in the middle of the park in which he seemed to relish.FT 1-4

Summary;A fantastic night for Town who played some excellent stuff throughout and a massive thanks for the first team players for there faultless hard working shift they put in to night which brought the younger lads on no end. Some useful and eye catching performance's from O'Boyle Few,and Duffield on a night which brought Town our first win of the season.
