Fleetwood Wednesday Academy Squad Vs Stalybridge Celtic

Stalybridge Celtic Vs Fleetwood Academy

Result : 3 - 3

Football Conference Youth Alliance

This was Towns fourth game of the season and on the back of three wins and an impressive victory in the FA youth cup, the squad were in high spirits maybe too high. The Stalybridge team looked strong and were made up of all U19 players.

From the first whistle the home side looked to play and found hole in the Town back line to exploit. With Town struggling to find their feet the home side took full advantage. With a long ball played forward, an aerial challenge from Duggan deemed to be a foul in the area and from the resulting spot kick, Town were a goal down. Eight minutes later and another ball played forward to Stalybridge striker Sheriff who turned the defense and riffled in the home teams second goal. The score remained at 2 - 0 through to half time.

At the interval Town made a tactical change in formation to suit the very narrow pitch. This worked well and Town started to take control of the game and had numerous chances to reduce the score.  On 54 minutes Town received a free kick on just outside the area which was converted by Josh Walker.  This spurred Town on and were unlucky not to be given two penalties in the space on five minutes with a foul and a hand ball which were unseen by all officials.

Town pressed on and with ten minutes remaining a ball was played in from the right and the home sides centre half under pressure from Liam Wynn turned the ball into his own net to level the score 2 - 2. Town took the game to Stalybridge and looked likely to secure the win. When in the 87 minute and a rare attack from the home side ended in a free kick 35 yards out.  With the ball played into the box and an error between defense and goal keeper allowed the home side to take the lead 3 - 2.  Town pushed on and on the stoke of full time substitute Joe Mooney drove passed the home defense and nicked the ball passed the oncoming keeper who halted his progress, on this occasion the referee pointed to the spot and Sam Christensen calmly slotted the ball into the net to level the score at 3 - 3.  This was how it ended with the final whistle coming from the centre kick.

The old cliche of a game of two half was the order of the day with both sides having the majority of play in either half. The unbeaten run continues, with a tough encounter next week against a strong Birmingham City Blues side.
