FA Youth Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

Fleetwood Town’s youth side matched their first team in reaching the first round proper of the FA’s main competition by overcoming Nantwich Town away from home.

Fleetwood enjoyed a three goal lead for most of the first period thanks to a brace from midfielder Lewis Phillips and a penalty conversion by front man Ben Duffield. The home side pulled goals back either side of the break but Fleetwood always looked more composed and capable.

Nantwich did muster a fight-back in the second half, particularly when first year pro Jack Duggan went off injured, but Alan Wright’s men defended their lead until the final whistle.

The victory, along with success in earlier rounds against Prescott Cables and Vauxhall Motors, means Fleetwood now visit Macclesfield in the first round.

Town left-back and U18 manager Alan Wright said “We had control of the game in the first half but allowed Nantwich to edge back into the game with their first goal. The second half was more difficult for us but we battled on.  Loosing Jack Duggan was a blow because he is a good influence at the heart of our defence. But we dug in and ensured we progressed to the next round.”
